CHRD-SAS is the Delhi centre of the Society for Applied Studies, a Research and Development organization formed under the Societies Registration Act of the Government of India. CHRD-SAS specializes in community based research, assessment and action, product evaluation and clinical trials. Although SAS has been conducting community based research in urban resettlement neighborhoods of South Delhi, and Faridabad and Palwal districts of Haryana. The platform will facilitate recruitment and mentoring of appropriately qualified researchers, skill improvement of key personnel through higher education, establishment of strong linkages with government partners for endorsement and facilitating research findings to policies, and upgradation of existing infrastructure.

CHRD-SAS, with research as a full time preoccupation, focuses on prevention of diseases, deficiencies and disabilities of public health significance with special emphasis on newborns, children and mothers through large intervention trials, impact assessment of interventions, exploratory research around proof of concept and policy research. CHRD-SAS is amongst the few groups in India that conduct community-based or cohort studies with large sample sizes (largest ~97000 under twos followed up for one year). It is well known for its capabilities in community health, nutrition, cognition, epidemiology, social science, infectious diseases, population based clinical research and cohort studies, advanced data management and biostatistics, and technology evaluation and diffusion. It has skills and experience in regulatory aspects of product development, post marketing surveillance, large scale project management. Scrutiny of research publications in child health revels that investigators at CHRD-SAS have made globally recognized scientific contribution. SAS is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Government of India and pursues its mission through national and global competitive grants from not-for-profit sources. CHRD-SAS has a data management centre which is consistent with ICH-GCP and FDA requirements and has cleared an audit to conduct data management of phase III trials. The field office of ~10000 sq ft houses the field teams for the different trials. CHRD-SAS administrative and financial management capacity was reviewed and approved by KPMG Advisory Services Pvt Ltd.

SAS has long term collaborations with several national and international institutions. SAS is the WHO Collaborating Center for Research, Community-based Action and Programme Development in Child Health. It is a key partner in the ‘Centre for Intervention Science in Maternal and Child Health’ consortium - a new platform for MNCH intervention research with the Centre for International Health at University of Bergen, Norwegian Institute of Public Health and Christian Michelsen Institute and international partners in six low and middle income countries. CHRD-SAS is ‘Centre of Excellence’ in the Collegium of Clinical Research Excellence (CCRE) selected by CDSA, an independent autonomous institute established by DBT. It is THSTI’s partner in the ‘Population Science Partnership Centre’ approved by DBT, Government of India. SAS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration on Implementation Research in Child Health and Nutrition between the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Haryana, and another for conducting collaborative clinical research with Hamdard Institute of Medical Science and Research and associated Hakim Abdul Hameed Centenary Hospital (a deemed university).
