PRERNA (Platform for Research Excellence Related to National Aims) is a platform created to promote improved, innovative, impactful research on maternal and child health and development. It is composed of three Indian partners and one technical support/international linkage institution:

  • Centre for Health Research and Development, Society for Applied Studies - CHRD-SAS, New Delhi.
  • Christian Medical College - CMC, Vellore.
  • KEM Hospital Research Centre - KEM, Pune.
  • Department of Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health (MCA) of the World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva.

PRERNA was born from an effective collaboration of these institutions that are engaged in research related to family health with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other agencies.

PRERNA is primarily an experimental model. The successful implementation of this platform is expected to show the way forward and encourage donors to replicate it in India and other countries for accelerated progress in the implementation of quality research in priority issues.

PRERNA aims to increase focus on integrated interventions for health, survival, growth and development. It addresses the needs of mothers, newborns and children along the life cycle: starting from the preconception period, through pregnancy and antenatal care, care at birth and during the neonatal period and early childhood.

The sustained collaboration between the partners will promote innovation in the development and testing of interventions. This will produce the base for enhanced likelihood of widely implementable interventions and sharpen our understanding of failure and success.

PRERNA will allow for the pooling of interdisciplinary talent, collective nurturing of young investigators, global connectivity and incisive programs rather than individual projects.
